Here Are Our 2019 Academy Award Predictions

It’s that time of year again, and what better way to celebrate Hollywood patting themselves on the back by awarding their friends golden trophies than to make some predictions of our own?

Some thoughts before our predictions:

  • Roma is the odds-on favourite to win, but given that it’s a Netflix film (which the Academy seems biased against), don’t be surprised if something else comes out on top. I have my eye on The Favourite.
  • All the acting awards are locked up – save for Best Supporting Actress. Regina King is the current front-runner, but this is the category most ripe for an upset. Combined with the fact it’s usually presented earlier in the night, this could be a different way to start off the evening.
  • Considering Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), Debra Granik (Leave No Trace), and Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) were snubbed from the Best Director race, this award is Alfonso Cuaron’s to lose.
  • Avengers: Infinity War is the favourite to win Best Visual Effects, but this category has very often been topsy-turvy over the last few years. Ready Player One could be a player here, or the downplayed First Man (from Academy Award winner Damien Chazelle) might make an appearance as well.
